In 2016, Kennisland started the social lab Liebes Kreta in Vienna.++Liebes KretaThe neighbourhood around the Ankerbrotfabrik used to be called Kreta. That’s why the social lab operates under the name of Liebes Kreta. Take a look at the project page. Together with the Viennese initiatives in Objekt 19 (part of the Ankerbrotfabrik) we have collected stories from the neighbourhood and found common themes that connect the citizens living in this area.
We have formed new coalitions around ideas that are aimed at both giving the neighbourhood a positive impulse and connecting Objekt 19 to the area surrounding it. The ideas are being brought to life through prototyping; we have continually tested and improved projects and services to find out what could improve the neighbourhood The ideas are being brought to life through prototyping; we have continually tested and improved projects and services to find out what could improve the neighbourhood.and suit the re-destination of Objekt 19 in the former bakery best.++Social labsRead more on our social lab methodology.
At this moment, three prototypes have been developed:
1. Admirabel
Admirabel, named after Vienna’s infamous sports gambling cafés Admiral, is a mobile betting performance which encourages participants to place creative wagers with alternative stakes, that exclude money and goods. It engages people to take time to connect with each other’s skills and lives through bets, asking the question: what can I offer my neighbour or a family member that does not require money? And what could they offer me? The art performance puts a twist on the (sometimes toxic) habit of betting and aims at opening doors to different perspectives on (a sometimes not so easy) lifeWhat can I offer my neighbour or a family member that does not require money?.

2. The Haustierverein
As the result of a bet during the prototyping of Admirabel, the Haustierverein in Kreta connects people from all ages, backgrounds and streets through a shared love: their pets. The Haustierverein in Kreta connects people from all ages, backgrounds and streets through a shared love: their pets. The Haustierverein is aimed at being set up by and for neighbours with the help of the Liebes Kreta team, and will involve all kinds of activities related to pets, from pet photo shooting to specific education. The Haustierverein should help breaking through interpersonal stigmas and might support the start of unexpected friendships.
3. The Olympiade
The Olympiade, an old Viennese sports tradition that held place around the Ankerbrotfabrik in the beginning of the twentieth century, is coming back to the neighbourhood. Decades ago, the 10th district was the Viennese best in raising athletes and playing all kinds of sports matches. A proud district, connected through the love for sports. With the closing of the former bread factoryReviving empty areas and turning them into sports fields, connecting sports watchers, sports players and all those involved in creating a healthy lifestyle and a proud neighbourhood. around fifteen years ago, a lot of the social infrastructure in the surrounding area has crumbled. ‘No man’s areas’, small patches of grass that were used to play sports, a swimming pool and other sports facilities have slowly disappeared or are less in favour. For the first new Olympiade, Liebes Kreta has set up an Olympic Committee of sports heroes from the district; sports associations, event planners, (sports) artists and of course athletes themselves. The Olympic Committee works on making sports a shared love in the district again; reviving empty areas and turning them into sports fields, connecting sports watchers, sports players and all those involved in creating a healthy lifestyle and a proud neighbourhood.
The Olympiade will take place from Monday the 26th to Thursday the 29th of June 2017 in and around the Ankerbrotfabrik.
