Everyone could initiate a plan for a new school or educational renewal in Amsterdam. On the 22nd of April the Amsterdam Education Challenge was launched. It is a search for initiators of new schools, which can eventually accommodate the expected growing amount of pupils in Amsterdam. The most promising initiatives have been selected by the public and a jury of experts. Kennisland coaches these projects, with the support of experts in the educational field and Educational Sciences students. The most viable projects will continue to develop in the so-called ‘delivery room’, in which they can start to establish actual new places in the educational system of Amsterdam.
This challenge is a call to everyone who is concerned about education in Amsterdam. Kennisland is commissioned by the Municipality of Amsterdam to challenge all its inhabitants to apply their ideas for a new school.
This project is very unique for several reasons. The starting point, for example, is exceptional: while the largest part of the Netherlands is facing a decrease of the amount of pupils, the prognosis in Amsterdam until 2025 is that the population of pupils will increase with more than 10% in secondary education and with 7,4% in primary education. The current supply of schools in Amsterdam is insufficient to deal with this growth, which emphasises the necessity to create new schools.
To the Municipality of Amsterdam this challenge is a chance not only to increase the supply of education, but also to increase the diversity of schools, and to find out what the inhabitants of Amsterdam define as good education. Kennisland has a lot of expertise and experience to create renewal and movement in the field of education. In this project, we are responsible for the challenge and the incubator.
